How to Measure Your Lawn Mower Wheels for Green Grippers
Here is a 5-step process to measure your lawn mower wheel to determine the correct Green Gripper size you need.
- Prepare the Mower and Wheel: Park your lawn mower on a flat, level surface and ensure the engine is off and cool. Clean any mud, grass, or debris from the wheel that might interfere with an accurate measurement.
- Locate the Outer Edge: Identify the outermost edge of the tire tread. This is the point you will measure from to ensure the Green Gripper fits over the entire wheel.
- Measure the Diameter: Using a tape measure, or a ruler, measure the total diameter of the wheel from the outer edge of the wheels tread on one side directly across the center to the outer edge of the wheel tread on the opposite side. Ensure your measurement goes through the exact center of the wheel hub for accuracy.
- Record Your Measurement: Note down the measurement in inches. It’s helpful to measure a couple of times to ensure your going to order the correct size Green Gripper.
- Determine Green Gripper Size: Compare your recorded measurement to the available Green Gripper sizes.
- If your wheel measures approximately 7 inches in diameter, you’ll need the 7-inch Green Gripper. NOT AVAILIBLE YET
- If your wheel measures approximately 8 inches in diameter, you’ll need the 8-inch Green Gripper.
- If your wheel measures approximately 9 inches in diameter, you’ll need the 9-inch Green Gripper.

Main Components:
- Circular Ground Grip (20): The Green Gripper’s flexible design, featuring the Circular Ground Grip (20), allows it to conform to different wheel shapes while maintaining tread spacing between 0.75 and 1.75 inches for optimal traction.
- Treaded Grip Design on Outer Surface (21): The pattern of the treads, particularly the thicker design, enhances the Green Gripper’s grip on the ground across various terrains. Thicker treads provide greater surface area contact, improving traction on surfaces like sand, mud, and uneven ground.
- Side of Wheel Cover That Grips The Ground (22): This is the part that comes into direct contact with the ground, ensuring a firm grip.
Adjustability and Fit:
- Circular Wheel Grip (10): is crucial for maintaining a stable and effective connection between the Green Gripper and the lawn mower wheel.
- Adjustable Circular Size Fits Different Models of Wheels (11): The Green Gripper is designed to fit various wheel sizes, making it compatible with a wide range of lawn mowers.
- Outer Surface Width for Wheels (12): The width 1.5 inches of the wheel doesn’t affect the fit of the Green Gripper.
- Inner Surface Width for Wheels Is Not Important (13): The 1.5 inches width of the wheel doesn’t affect the fit of the Green Gripper. The inner surface of the Green Gripper is designed to flex and conform to different wheel diameters, ensuring a secure fit across a variety of lawn mowers.
- The Adjusting Gap (30): This gap allows the Green Gripper to accommodate different wheel sizes.
- The Gap That Can Accommodate Different Sized Wheels (31): This design ensures compatibility with a wide range of wheel sizes, accommodating wheels from 7.25 inches to 10 inches. The Green Gripper has an adjustable gap that’s essential for fitting various wheel sizes. This is because not all lawn mower wheels have the same diameter. The gap where the two ends of the Gripper connect can be adjusted. The maximum gap between treads can be 1.75 inches, and the minimum gap is 0.75 inches.
Installation and Structure:
- Screw Holes (40): These are the holes used to attach the Green Gripper to the wheel.
- Screw holes between treads are formed not drilled (41): This refers to a manufacturing process we use, 3D Printing, where the screw holes are printed into the plastic rather than being drilled after the fact. Screw holes between treads are formed during 3D printing, eliminating the need for post-production drilling.
- All screws are not necessary for the functionality of the wheel cover (42): Not all screw holes need to be used for the “Green Gripper Original” to function properly. But all other models require the need to use each screw hole for the best results.

How Long Will Your Green Grippers last?
Green Grippers are crafted from sturdy PLA Poly (lactic acid) materials to ensure durability.
Green Grippers have a lifespan of about one season of normal use. This estimate considers the material used PLA, a biodegradable plastic and the usual stresses on a lawn mower’s wheels. We have tested the Green Gripper design for over 2 years. Please Click Here for more information on testing.
The longevity of your Green Grippers is influenced by usage frequency. It is typical to use them on grass, but prolonged exposure to concrete and asphalt may reduce their effectiveness and lifespan.
Green Grippers stand out because they use biodegradable materials instead of the common petroleum-based plastics found in many products today. While traditional plastics can last for hundreds or even thousands of years in landfills and oceans, harming wildlife and ecosystems, Green Grippers are made from PLA (Polylactic Acid). This bioplastic comes from renewable plant sources like corn starch.
Not only do Green Grippers provide great traction for your lawn, but they are also a responsible choice for the environment. Once they are no longer useful, and if disposed of properly, they can break down in industrial composting conditions. This helps prevent them from becoming long-lasting pollutants in our oceans and contributes to reducing plastic waste. By choosing Green Grippers, you support a cleaner and healthier planet!

Green Grippers: Sizing for Self-Propelled Mowers
The Green Grippers accommodates powered lawn mower wheels within the 8 to 9-inch range but we are still growing and designing new sizes.
The standard rear-wheel dimensions for a self-propelled lawn mower typically range from 7 to 12 inches, with front-wheel sizes falling between 6 and 9 inches. Push mower treads commonly come in widths of 1.5 inches, 1.75 inches, and 2 inches, with 8-inch wheels being prevalent in the market.
Here’s a breakdown of different front wheel sizes and their pros and cons:
- 8 inches: This is the most popular size for good reason. It offers excellent maneuverability and stability on a variety of terrain.
- 7 inches: This size is slightly smaller and more maneuverable than 8-inch wheels, making it a good choice for smaller lawns or tight spaces. However, it may not be as stable on uneven terrain.
- 9 inches: This size offers more stability than 8-inch wheels, making it a good choice for larger lawns or uneven terrain. However, it may be less maneuverable in tight spaces.
The specific size of the front wheel will ultimately depend on the make and model of your lawn mower. You can check your owner’s manual or consult with the manufacturer to determine the correct size for your machine.

Do Green Grippers Work On Riding Lawn Mowers?
Green Grippers are designed exclusively for self-propelled lawn mowers.
They improve the traction of the wheels powered by the mower’s engine, allowing for better movement. However, they are not suitable for push mowers, which rely on manual operation, or riding mowers, which have different wheel and drive systems. To take advantage of the significant traction benefits that Green Grippers offer, your lawn mower must have a self-propel feature.
Green Grippers: Biodegradable and Better for the Planet
Yes, Green Grippers are made from biodegradable materials.
The monomer is typically made from fermented plant starch such as from corn, cassava, sugarcane, or sugar beet pulp. PLA has SPI resin ID code 7. PLA is biodegradable under industrial composting conditions, starting with a chemical hydrolysis process, followed by microbial digestion, to ultimately degrade the PLA. Under industrial composting conditions (58 °C (136 °F)), PLA can partly (about half) decompose into water and carbon dioxide in 60 days, after which the remainder decomposes much more slowly,[55] with the rate depending on the material’s degree of crystallinity. How Many of The Green Grippers Do I Need For My Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?
Green Grippers are only necessary for the drive wheels of your lawn mower, as these are the wheels that propel the machine forward.
The drive wheels harness the engine’s power to push or pull the mower, making optimal grip essential to prevent slipping and ensure efficient movement. The non-drive wheels merely support the mower and do not contribute to forward motion, so additional traction on them is not required. Additionally, Green Grippers add only about a quarter of an inch (0.25″) to the wheel’s diameter and do not significantly raise the mower in grass. This slight increase in height means there is no need to equip all four wheels to maintain an even cutting deck, as the impact on cutting height is minimal.

Why Green Grippers Are Your Best Traction Solution
Choosing the Best Traction Solution: Engineered Performance vs. DIY Methods
When you are dealing with a self-propelled lawn mower, these DIY traction hacks go from being a bad idea to a total mechanical disaster. Because a self-propelled mower relies on an internal drive system to turn the wheels and pull the machine forward, forcing home-brew grips onto the tires directly threatens the most expensive parts of your mower.
Here is exactly why those DIY tricks are so dangerous for self-propelled wheels and drive systems:
1. They Obliterate the Transmission and Drive Gears
Self-propelled mowers use a precise system of belts, pulleys, and small plastic or metal drive gears inside the wheels to move the mower forward.
The DIY Hazard: When you add heavy, unbalanced metal screw studs or chunky, glued-on bicycle treads, you cause the wheels to violently shake and vibrate.
The Damage: This constant rattling travels directly down the axle, stripping the teeth on your drive gears, snapping transmission belts, and burning out the self-propelled drive box. What started as a cheap hack turns into a $150+ transmission repair.
2. They Strip the Critical Wheel Drive Teeth
If you look at the inside rim of most front-wheel or rear-wheel self-propelled mowers, you will see a ring of gear teeth molded directly into the plastic wheel. The mower’s drive pinions lock into these teeth to turn the wheel.
The DIY Hazard: Drilling screws into the tire or tightening heavy zip ties forces the wheel out of its perfect factory alignment.
The Damage: As the imbalanced wheel wobbles, the internal drive pinion will start slipping and grinding against the plastic wheel teeth. Within just a few mows, those teeth will be completely stripped flat, leaving your self-propelled feature entirely useless.
3. High Torque Turns DIY “Studs” Into Projectiles
Unlike a push mower, a self-propelled mower applies direct engine torque (rotational force) to the wheels to force them forward through thick grass and up hills.
The DIY Hazard: This aggressive forcing action puts massive stress on any DIY attachment.
The Danger: Because the wheel is actively forcing its way over rocks, roots, and curbs, metal screws or brittle zip ties will easily snap under the pressure. The spinning force of a powered wheel can instantly launch a broken metal screw out like a bullet, risking severe injury to you or anyone nearby.
4. They Ruin the Free-Wheel Clutch Mechanism
Self-propelled mowers feature a “free-wheel” design that allows the wheels to spin freely when you disengage the drive lever to pull the mower backward or turn a tight corner.
The DIY Hazard: Adhesives like Shoe Goo or expanding glues easily drip into the wheel housing during application.
The Damage: If glue gets into the wheel bearings or the drive pinion clutch, it will seize the mechanism entirely. Your wheels will lock up, preventing you from pulling the mower backward and completely ruining the handling of the machine.
